National Awareness Campaign about Perinatal Asphyxia

Setembro Verde Esperança (“September Green Hope”) campaign, created by the Protecting Brains Saving Futures Institute, in partnership with the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, already has the multiple entities in Brazil and internationally.

In September, the Protecting Brains & Saving Futures Institute will launch “Setembro Verde Esperança” campaign, which aims to raise awareness among the general population about the risks of perinatal asphyxia and treatments for this condition, which affects more than 1.15 million babies in the world every year.

In Brazil, in a period of 12 months, it is estimated that around 20 thousand babies are born with lack of oxygen to the brain. Perinatal asphyxia is the third leading cause of neonatal death – 23% of newborn mortality worldwide – as well as being the leading cause of permanent brain damage in full-term babies.

This campaign already has the support of Association for Assistance to Disabled Children, Jô Clemente Institute, Brazilian Academy of Pediatrics, Brazilian Society of Child Neurology, Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations, Brazilian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Brazilian Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, large communities of health professionals, in addition to many Brazilian hospitals. This project also has support from Ministry of Health in Brazil, who will participate in this discussion in online sessions, and also parliamentary support in which from September 25 to 30ththe national congress will be illuminated in green in allusion to the campaign.

“The objective is to promote a series of actions that bring the theme to the discussion of the whole society.”

About the Campaign

Perinatal asphyxia represents a harsh reality where, after diagnosis, it is estimated that less than 5% of asphyxiated newborns in our country will have access to the most appropriate treatment and support. As a result, most of them may have their future compromised by severe neurological impairment such as cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment, blindness or deafness.

This campaign chooses the green color and hopes to fell to make the population aware that with the proper treatment we can minimize the profound socioeconomic impact of this disease in our country.

The main objectives of this campaign include: uniting supporting institutions with the aim of raise awareness to the society that Perinatal Asphyxia is a serious public health problem; alert the public and private sectors to the need to reduce the impact of this disease in our country; and by reducing the chances of neurological impairment in babies, we may change the life stories of thousands of children and their families.

Economic Burden

The adequate treatment for this population also allows for a reduction of the economic burden of this disease by reducing direct health care costs such as the need for complementary tests, hospitalizations, and multidisciplinary medical monitoring throughout life. In addition, there is still an important reduction in indirect costs, such as loss of productivity and public spending in relation to health and the need for social assistance.
